What is stainless steel 1.4521?

Stainless steel 1.4521—also known as AISI 444 or X2CrMoTi18‑2—is a ferritic stainless steel that has been stabilized with titanium and/or niobium. European standard EN 10088‑2 classes it as a ferritic grade suitable for sheet, plate and strip. The steel contains approximately 17–20 % chromium and 1.8–2.5 % molybdenum; carbon and nitrogen are kept very low while titanium or niobium additions stabilise the microstructure. Fushun Special Steel notes that AISI 444 is a low‑carbon, dual‑stabilised molybdenum‑containing ferritic stainless steel with good ductility and toughness. Because the alloy lacks nickel, it is immune to chloride‑induced stress‑corrosion cracking and is often compared with austenitic grade 316 in terms of corrosion and oxidation resistance.

Chemical composition

The European standard composition for 1.4521 (EN 10088‑2) is summarised below. Titanium content must satisfy the equation Ti = [4 × (C + N) + 0.15] – 0.80 %. This ensures stabilization and minimizes intergranular corrosion.

ElementContent (wt %)
C≤ 0.025
Si≤ 1.00
Mn≤ 1.00
P≤ 0.040
S≤ 0.015
Cr17 – 20
Mo1.8 – 2.5
N≤ 0.03
Ti0.15 – 0.8

This composition produces a ferritic microstructure with excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. Molybdenum boosts pitting resistance in chloride environments, while titanium stabilisation prevents carbide precipitation during welding.

Physical and mechanical properties

1.4521 stainless steel has a density of ≈ 7.7 g/cm³. Its mechanical properties vary with product form, but typical values in the annealed condition are summarised below:

PropertyTypical value
Yield strength (Rp0.2)280–320 MPa (annealed)
Ultimate tensile strength400–640 MPa
Minimum elongation at fracture≥ 20 %
Brinell hardness≤ 185 HB
Young’s modulus (ambient)~ 220 GPa
Thermal conductivity (ambient)~ 23 W/(m·K)
Linear thermal expansion (ambient)~ 10.4 × 10⁻⁶/K

AISI 444’s yield strength remains above 230 MPa up to 200 °C, which makes it suitable for elevated‑temperature service. The alloy’s Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is about 25, indicating high resistance to localized corrosion. Fushun Special Steel lists a 0.2 % proof stress ≥ 275 MPa, tensile strength ≥ 415 MPa and elongation ≥ 20 %, which align with the EN values. These properties ensure good formability—AISI 444 can be roll‑formed, deep‑drawn and spun without excessive work hardening.

Corrosion resistance and temperature limits

The combination of high chromium and molybdenum content gives 1.4521 excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. The steel is immune to chloride ion stress‑corrosion cracking and retains good strength at elevated temperatures. It also offers satisfactory resistance to dilute sulfuric acid and highly concentrated sodium hydroxide solutions. The maximum service temperature for mechanical loads is around 930 °C, while corrosion resistance is maintained up to about 500 °C.

Applications of 1.4521 stainless steel

Applications of 1.4521 stainless steel

Because of its combination of strength, corrosion resistance and formability, stainless steel 1.4521 finds use in a broad range of industries. Fushun identifies typical applications such as marine engineering, furnaces and gas turbines, chemical processing, boiler and pressure vessels and nuclear power plants. The alloy’s resistance to chloride environments makes it suitable for hot‑water tanks, heat exchangers and chimney ducts. It can also be used in transportation exhaust systems, kitchen equipment, storage tanks and architectural components where both aesthetics and corrosion resistance are required.

Standards and equivalent grades

1.4521 is specified in several European standards, including EN 10088‑2, EN 10028‑7, EN 10296‑2, EN 10088‑1 and EN 10088‑4. In ASTM/UNS nomenclature it corresponds to AISI 444 (UNS S44400). Equivalent grades include JIS SUS444 and ss 2326. When sourcing this material, it is wise to consult the relevant standard to ensure the correct form and condition for your application.

Sourcing and buying considerations

When evaluating stainless steel 1.4521 suppliers, buyers should consider both the material specification and the available product forms. BACH INDUSTRY AG offers 1.4521 as sheet, coil, pipe, plate, tubing, bar and stock. Our inventory is available for immediate sale with competitive pricing. The price of stainless steel 1.4521 depends on factors such as thickness, surface finish, quantity and market conditions. Customers in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Belgium and Africa benefit from local stock and rapid delivery, reducing logistics costs when they buy from us.

Practical tips

  • Datasheet & standards: always request a datasheet from your stainless steel 1.4521 supplier. It should detail chemical composition, mechanical properties and testing conditions.

  • Welding and fabrication: the alloy is weldable with common fusion and resistance techniques. For thicker sections, pre‑heating and controlled cooling may be necessary to prevent brittleness. Its ferritic structure provides good ductility for cold‑forming but limited stretch forming.

  • Heat treatment: 1.4521 is typically supplied in the annealed condition. It is not hardenable by heat treatment; solution annealing between 750–900 °C followed by rapid cooling is used to restore corrosion resistance after fabrication.
